Impacts of Quality Improvement Incentives on Automation Investments in the Finnish New Regulation Model
During the second regulatory period of 2008-2011 incentives are included into the Finnish regulation model that allow higher profits for the network owners for properly allocated network investments leading to lower operation and interruption costs. In this paper the economical benefit and payback time of different automation schemes in two typical Finnish rural medium voltage (MV) distribution feeders are studied.

Improved Transmission Representations in Oligopolistic Market Models: Quadratic Losses, Phase Shifters, and DC Lines
Practical models of competition among power generators who possess market power have generally had to use simplified models of transmission costs and constraints in order to be tractable. In particular, the linearized dc load flow model has been popular in complementarity and other types of oligopoly models. In this paper, we show how such models can be generalized to include quadratic losses, controllable DC lines, and phase shifting transformers.

In-Service Mooring Inspection for Mobile Drilling Units
Following collaboration with a Houston based drilling organisation, Welaptega Marine now provides the ability for MODU operators to fulfil compliance driven and post hurricane inspections at sea, whilst the MODU is working; or as part of a scheduled rig move. Compared to traditional inspection techniques this approach has been proven to achieve significant time and cost-savings. For more information please download this free white paper.

Increasing Cost-Efficiency of Substation Automation Systems by Centralised Protection Functions
New legislative and customer-oriented requirements pose challenges to substation automation. Technology developed by ABB in cooperation with Tampere University of Technology and Fortum Finland addresses these challenges with centralised protection functions. The new concept facilitates easy upgradeability of substations while still keeping costs low and reliability high. New value added functionality will also increase cost-efficiency.

Influencing the Human Factor: Developing Leadership Capacity
As well as demonstrating a commitment to health and safety, leaders in the offshore & renewable sectors need to understand better how to use their role to create an effective safety culture. They need to become transformational. This White Paper describes the transformational leadership approach that we use to develop leadership capacity. It provides examples of this approach in operation and its impact both on leaders and on the organisation.

Influencing the Human Factor: Improving Safety Conversations
Health and safety intervention is a key safety process. Most people in high risk industries work alongside others. Therefore, any unsafe act will be witnessed by a colleague who could then intervene. Through anxiety, lack of confidence or communication skill, people can be reluctant to intervene. This white paper describes how Shell and Petroleum Geo-Services are improving safety conversations through ‘hands-on’ experiential training.

Innovative Revenue Metering With Existing Instrument Transformers to Enable New Metering Challenges
New legal boundaries between TenneT TSO and Distribution Network Operators are located at the primary connections of the power transformers in the substations. The new boundary resulted in a demand for revenue metering at these points, which presented a challenge due to the absence of metering equipment. This paper presents the investigation of an alternative for a complete retrofit using corrections for existing instrument transformers in combination with an intelligent metering system.
