Logistical Masterpiece: Supersize Transformer Leaves Siemens' Plant in Nuremberg on its Way to Wilhelmshaven With a payload of 495 metric tons, the heaviest transformer Siemens has ever built left the manufacturing plant in Nuremberg, Germany, in November. That the transformer turned out to be such a heavyweight was due to the special requirements made by its purchaser, a German power plant operator. These included very low core inductivity and a particularly low short-circuit voltage - which could only be achieved by adding material mass. That brings the 932MVA generator transformer (420kV), intended for a hard-coal-fired power plant of GDF Suez power utility currently under construction in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, up to a total weight of 693t when filled with insulating oil ready for operation – as heavy as 530 compact-size cars. The giant component left the Nuremberg works on the world's biggest bridge girder trailer on 12 November 2010, and will take about two weeks to reach its destination in Wilhelmshaven on the North Sea.
