Faymonville’s Innovative Range of Modules

Published 30 January 2012 | By Faymonville

The product range of MODULMAX with the series S-MODULE, G-MODULE and POWERMAX was developed with the worldwide unique characteristic of the interchangeability with other existing brands.

With the innovation of the interchangeability the heavy haulage companies worldwide can choose the supplier of the modular vehicles and are not bound to one unique brand.

The MODULMAX range is based on the combination of several 2 to 6 axle modules. Payloads going from 80 tonnes right up to 1,000 tonnes are possible. In fact, the upper limits of the equipment are mainly laid down by the regulations (load permitted on the ground etc.). The equipment can be used just as well on the public highway as inside factories. The legal limit on the public highway (often between 12 and 16 tonnes per axle line depending on the country) is much lower than the maximum technical load of 36 tonnes/axle line at 1 km/h.

There are many possibilities as far as configuration is concerned. It is possible to opt for single modules, with a gooseneck or drawbar added, to fit lowbed platforms or an adaptor for transporting wind turbines. In addition it is possible to work in 3- or 4 files (i.e. with a half module or a whole module connected laterally). Everything is possible and thanks to the interchangeability with other brands, there are no limits for the customer.

Faymonville modules are available in short term, metallized as standard and thanks to high-tech production tools produced with high precision. All current accessories, such as gooseneck, drawbar, loading platforms are also available.

The POWERMAX is a modular vehicle (3 to 6 axle lines) with motorized axles capable of keeping up with a speed of up to 80km/h in 'free wheeling' mode, without any restrictions regarding the distance or load.

The POWERMAX can be used in 3 operating forms:

  • As a standard modular trailer with all benefits of the MODULMAX-range
  • As constitution of the truck in hills, where an additional force is necessary. With the POWERMAX a second or third tractor is not necessary anymore and the transport costs can be reduced considerably
  • As self-propelled version for inter-factory use at low speed (5 or 6 km/h), without the backup of any external traction ? with a POWERMAX 6x4 up to 300 tonnes on flat ground

A semi-trailer pulled by a tractor has to negotiate a route which involves a few hills. In order to set off or be able to climb the hills, the entire road assembly requires additional power. Usually, the haulier will have to resort to one or more additional tractors to provide the necessary traction and/or propulsion. These accompany the transport in stand-by during many kilometers, occupy resources and consume energy without any use.

To avoid having to resort to this additional tractor, Faymonville offers a POWERMAX semi-trailer equipped with motorized axles of its own. A cheap solution as it turns out, seeing that the additional tractor is very expensive - you can reckon around 250,000 euro - for additional traction power that is after all only necessary on certain sections of the journey. If you add in the cost connected to the second driver and fuel consumption you have a measure of the validity of the system. The motorized axles of the abolished tractor are replaced by the integrated motorized axles of the POWERMAX. The major advantage of the system lies in the fact that these motorized axles keep up with the speed of the tractor and the propulsion is switched on when needed. In case no additional force is needed, then the POWERMAX works as a normal trailer.

There are some motorized axles for special haulage semi-trailers on the market but their speed is limited to about 15 km/h max. The Faymonville solution enables the motorized axles to reach a speed of 80 km/h in 'free wheeling' mode without any distance or load restrictions. The up to now available axles with a 15 km/h limitation, furthermore, have to be lifted once not in use or they give rise to overheating, and they cannot therefore support any kind of load. It's a dead weight which essentially cuts the useful payload and increases the length of the vehicle. These axles with limited speed do not even have a type-approved braking system, unlike those on offer from Faymonville. A speed of up to 80 km/h and a type-approved braking system are the two main differences which set apart the POWERMAX from the motorized vehicles of the other manufacturers.

The motorized axles get their power from a PPU or Power Pack Unit that is basically composed of a diesel engine with mounted hydraulic pump. From a performance point of view, you should also know that the complete traction force is available with a minimum of 12 tons of load per axle. A Powermax 12x8 (6 axles with 4 motors) generates a traction force of approximately 30 tons. 2 motorized axle sets represent the equivalent of a 6x4 or 8x4 tractor in traction terms. A POWERMAX 12x8 can thus substitute 2 6x4 or 8x4 tractors. We would also like to point out that the same system may equally be used in an self-propelled version, which therefore will not require the backup of any external traction, for inter-factory use at reduced speeds (5 or 6 km/h). Moreover a very important point should be mentioned : for the maintenance of the brakes, the hydraulic wheel motor does not need to be open nor to be dismounted. This fact guarantees an easy maintenance and low costs.

The POWERMAX is the result of a partnership project of 3 specialists : SAF as well-known supplier of axles, Poclain as worldwide leader in the production of hydraulic motors, and Faymonville as one of the leading constructors of trailers for the heavy haulage industry. The 3 partners have gathered their entire knowhow in order to develop an optimized system easy to put into practice.
All used components have already made their prove in other application, that means that although the POWERMAX itself is a new, even revolutionary product, the end used get a metasystem of proved components. For the technical support and the resupplying of spare parts, the worldwide networks of Faymonville, Poclain and SAF can be used. For the user this means very quick reaction and low costs.

The POWERMAX can of course be coupled to al Faymonville module systems, but also to 70% of the worldwide operating modules of other producers with the guarantee of all technical and operational properties.

The advantages of a Faymonville trailer

  • The Faymonville trailers have a very low tare weight for a maximum stability due to the use of a fine-grained steel
  • The 8 coat protection of the chassis included the metallization permits the best protection against corrosion available currently on the special trailer market
  • The high level of innovation and the excellent manufacturing quality of our products are secured by our modern production plants and optimized production processes
