Outotec - Unconventional Oil Winning, Coal Gasification/Charring and Combustion Technologies

Utilising its extensive experience in plant design and project implementation as well as its expertise in combustion and heat recovery, Outotec now offers value-adding technologies and services to the energy industry as well as with a view to renewable resources.

Outotec
Enefit's new oil plant utilises new technology developed by Eesti Energia and Outotec. Construction of the first Enefit-280 shale oil plant began in spring 2010, and is anticipated to be completed by early 2012.

With increasing energy prices, due, in part, to ever-shrinking common traditional resources, fossil fuel alternatives such as oil shale or oil sand as well as biomass and biofuels have suddenly deserved a second look in terms of what they can offer for the future.

Oil shale pyrolysis and biomass combustion

After decades of providing expertise and innovation to the mining and metallurgical industries, Outotec realised that its capabilities, technologies and proprietary equipment could be expanded to include the energy industry. Our offerings include coal charring, gasification and combustion technologies for various plants, such as oil shale pyrolysis or biomass combustion.

Waste management and oil shale processing methods

In March 2009 Outotec launched a joint venture with Eesti Energia, based in Estonia, to develop and market sustainable, energy-efficient and economically viable oil shale processing methods. Our innovative technologies provide the path to optimised solutions and complete plants for the production of shale oil. Providing beneficiation, oil winning and energy-effective waste management, we offer complete plant solutions and plant optimisations. Since July we have been providing basic engineering and test work for a plant producing oil from Estonian oil shale.

In addition, Outotec and the Swedish company Skellefteå Kraft AB have also established a joint company, GreenExergy AB, which will focus on the developing, marketing, and delivering technologies for bio-energy power plants to produce bio-energy from forestry and sawmill residues.

Heat recovery and gas cleaning systems

Outotec maximises energy efficiency in all of its processes that operate at elevated temperatures by utilising the off-gas heat generated in other plant areas as an energy source. This reduces the carbon dioxide emissions of plants using Outotec technology. Thus, for all thermo-processing plants, the company offers heat recovery and gas cleaning systems.

From its global headquarters in Espoo, Finland, Outotec innovates and delivers sustainable technology and service solutions to minerals, metals, chemical and energy industries, providing lifelong collaborations with our customers to optimise the utilisation of raw materials and energy as well as to minimise the operating costs and environmental impacts. As a worldwide technology leader in minerals and metals processing, Outotec provides innovative, customised solutions to a wide variety of customers in iron and steel, aluminium and non-ferrous metals industries. The company designs and delivers plants, processes and equipment and provides engineering project and support services globally. Utilising a global network of sales and service centers, two research facilities and more than 3,100 experts, Outotec generated annual sales of €878 million in 2009.

Our energy engineering team is based at our Oberursel, Germany facilities, located just outside Frankfurt am Main. We provide solutions for:

  • Oil extraction from oil shale
  • Coal charring and gasification
  • Combustion of biomass / industrial side-products
