DanSteel - Steel Plates for Specialist Industries

DanSteel A/S manufactures a wide variety of steel plates for shipbuilders and wind turbine manufacturers from its strategic location in Denmark.

Producing high-quality steel plates for specialist industries, DanSteel has become a major player in the northern European steel sector. DanSteel is a new company, but built on many years of experience. It was established in 2002 in continuation of Danish Steel Works Ltd., which was founded in 1940, and specialises in the production of heavy plates for the wind energy, shipbuilding and construction industries. In 2006 DanSteel was bought by Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK) and now remains a part of that group.

Heavy plates produced to order

The DanSteel steel plate mill produces a broad range of plates, including heavy steel plates in a range of thicknesses from 6mm to 150mm and up to 3,250mm wide. We manufacture structural steel, cold forming, weldable fine grain and atmospheric corrosion resistant steel. We also supply steel for pressure vessels and shipbuilding.

Heavy plates are produced to order according to our customer's exact measurements and required grades of steel, which means that each plate is unique. Our customers benefit from very short delivery times and on-time delivery.

Treatment and testing services

DanSteel also offers complementary services to customers, including treatment and testing. Our range of services includes shot blasting and priming, which is of particular interest to shipbuilders. The plate's surface is cleaned by blasting it with steel shots; then a protective coating of primer is applied to both sides. This process protects the steel material against corrosion and increases the life of the structure it will be part of.

We also provide specific tests according to our customers' requirements. DanSteel engages in cooperation with classification societies and can undertake ultrasonic tests to ensure that materials in critical applications are free from any hidden defects. We also supply plates with Z-qualities and undertake Z-testing to guarantee the quality of steel plate across its thickness, which is important when other components are welded to the surface of the plate.

The DanSteel manufacturing site

In a continuous effort to improve our facilities, DanSteel has installed a new hot levelling machine in 2006 as well as an extra normalisation furnace for normalising plates. Our service centre preparing the plates for our customers has been in operation since 2008.

The DanSteel facility has its own harbour, which receives the majority of the raw materials and from which the production is loaded onto coasters and transported directly to the customers. Our site also has a direct railway link to the public rail system.

From this ideal geographic position, DanSteel supplies markets in the Nordic countries including Sweden, Norway and Denmark, as well as the UK, northern Germany and northern France. We also have customers in Spain, Portugal, Poland and the Baltic states.

Our customers in energy and other industries

DanSteel has three major segments of customers and is currently expanding into new markets.

In the wind energy sector, DanSteel supplies to manufacturers of all kinds of marine and shore-based wind turbines. Our clients include Vestas Wind Systems and Siemens Wind Energy, to name a few, as well as state-owned energy organisations in countries such as Denmark, Norway and the UK.

Another high priority industry sector for our business are the shipyards of Northern Europe. Steel stockholders and steel service centres are our third major group of customers.

DanSteel is in the process of widening the business focus to include customers in pressure vessel construction, machine building, as well as major construction companies.

Future focus on offshore wind energy

With a view towards the future economic upturn, DanSteel is currently considering a major investment programme. A new heavy plate centre, capable of processing heavy plates up to 30 tonnes, is almost ready. This new site will mainly provide products for the manufacture of offshore wind turbines. DanSteel produces heavy plates for the foundations and columns of offshore wind turbines, which must be able to withstand heavy wear and tear both during installation and in use.

Following the achievement of these imminent expansions, DanSteel will focus on further long-term improvements. These will include the replacement of the current mill with a new, wider one capable of producing steel with a higher strength to meet the demand in offshore markets and pipes.
