Drumpak is approved as a reusable type A/IP III packaging and consists of a robust stainless steel containment system incorporating a sealed closure that is leak-tight.
The Drumpak is a family of three Drumpaks (design numbers 2948, 2949 and 2950) that have been designed, manufactured, tested and licensed to meet the IAEA regulatory requirements (TS-R-1) for IP and type A packages for radioactive material transport.
Use
Drumpak is designed to carry a wide range of radioactive material. The large cavity allows flexibility in packing contents and will accommodate all the commonly used 200l waste drums, large pieces of activated plant and items of manufactured equipment.
Designed as a reusable packaging, it provides a cost-effective solution to transporting existing items and/or packages that do not meet the requirements of the regulations (IAEA TS-R-1). The stainless steel container provides a robust finish needing very little maintenance.
Approved contents
Radioactive material in solid form complying with the type A classification (such as manufactured equipment, activated items and waste). And material, including waste, in the form of LSA II, LSA III and SCO II suitably packed for handling purposes.
The maximum content weight of Drumpak is approximately 400kg. This could be increased subject to a satisfactory safety review.
The contents must be packed in such a manner so as to prevent gross movement or point contact during normal conditions of transport. The contents are also limited to ensure the external radiation levels of the package, as loaded and presented for transport, are within regulatory limits.
