Croft Associates Limited (Croft) announces that their new design packaging is under review by the NRC.
17 December 2009: This Type B (U) packaging, the Safkeg-LS Design Number 3979A, is a replacement for the US DOT Spec 6M packaging that ceased to be authorised on 1 October 2008. It is designed to meet most of the needs of those wishing to replace the 6M and Croft is under contract to supply a fleet of the Safkeg-LS to the University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR).
The Safkeg-LS offers a variety of cavity sizes, shielding thicknesses and will be authorised for a wide range of radioisotopes. The package weighs less than 150lb (68kg) when fully loaded, hence offers savings in shipping costs and is easy to handle.
It is expected that the formal NRC review stage of the submitted Safety Analysis Report for Packaging will conclude in January 2010 and provided that they are content with the case and any clarifications Croft is asked to provide, the certificate will be issued by June 2010.
Croft is gearing up for production of these units for delivery of the first batch shortly after the issuance of the NRC certificate.
