Croft - Containers for Packaging, Storage and Transport of Radioactive Materials

At the forefront of design and developement for the transportation of radioactive materials are Oxfordshire based Croft Associates. Their bespoke package designs meet the stringent requirements of the UN International Atomic Energy Agency before they will be approved and certified for use. Croft provide consultancy, design, testing, maintenance, licensing of IP, Type A and Type B fissile and non-fissile packaging

Leaders in packaging desgin, solutions, testing, licensing, certification and documentation

Croft works with government organisations and private companies in the nuclear industry as well as research reactors, hospitals, universities and medical product and equipment suppliers. It has become not just a leader in standard packaging designs, but also of bespoke solutions for organisations worldwide and often manages the approvals process covering testing and licensing, packaging identification and certification and documentation.

Croft develops packaging that safely transports radioactive materials which can range from radioactive waste and irradiated fuel samples through to bulk solids and liquid radioactive materials, and research and medical products and samples. Over 30 years Croft has continually evolved its package designs to meet its customer's needs, whether for storing radioactive materials in a single location or for moving it, often across national borders.

Products range from the Safkeg solution, which include designs for the transport of small samples through to designs that have the capacity to take up to kilogramme quantities of radioactive material, through to its large capacity Safstore family of packages for the storage, transport and final disposal of Intermediate Level Waste. Typically Croft Type B and Type A transport packaging will feature an outer container providing thermal and impact protection, inside which a smaller containment vessel will fit, housing the radioactive contents.

Safstore range launched summer 2012

In the summer of 2012, the company launched new designs in its Safstore range. These robust packages represent a new generation in design that provides significant advantages over earlier generation containers which relied predominantly on concrete for containment and high performance.

The Safstore packages (Ductile Cast Iron Containers -DCICs) can deliver integral shielding and a waste container that is mechanically robust, both of which contribute significantly to the product's long-term performance. These Safstores will enable waste processors to accelerate decommissioning and site clean-up by minimising the need to build shield stores and grout plant integral to waste packaging operations.

Croft supplies to international organisations from America, Japan, Australia, Russia and throughout Europe, and the rest of the world.

Many of the products and services can be seen on thier website.
