Croft - Containers for Packaging, Storage and Transport of Radioactive Materials

Since 1981 Croft has been carrying out the design, development, testing and licensing of fabricated containers in both stainless steel and mild steel for the packaging, storage and transport of radioactive materials. These include a range of standard package designs as well as "one-off" designs to suit customers' specific requirements.

The range of standard package designs developed by the company is currently either certified by the relevant competent authority for B(U) and B(U)F packages, or by Croft for IP and type A packages designed by Croft.

In addition to approvals in the UK, approvals and validations have also been carried out in other countries including France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, the US, Canada, Russia and Japan.

Croft has extensive experience of designing and gaining approvals for packaging consisting of sample containers, primary containment vessels and outer or overpack containers.

Croft was instrumental in the introduction of IP-2 ISO Freight Containers in the UK for the transport and disposal of low-level radioactive waste to the Drigg site. Croft also developed a full-height reusable ISO container (design number 2896) that is now used at most UK nuclear sites for storage and transport of LLW in drums and as special items.

Croft provides products and services for the sectors involved in the transport and storage of radioactive materials, radioactive waste, radioisotopes and sources. Products range from small containers for type A materials and keg-sized containers for type B materials to flasks for cobalt sources and ISO containers for intermediate- or low-level radioactive waste.

Croft also supplies an easy-to-use instrument for checking leak-tightness of containers prior to shipments. Services include designing to customer requirements, testing to ensure that designs meet regulations and the routine annual maintenance of containers.
