BBC Chartering - Break Bulk and Heavy Lift Shipping

Since its founding more than a decade ago, BBC Chartering has striven to provide the widest range of services possible to the break bulk and heavy lift shipping sectors. All capital investment in shipping since the company started in Bremen, Germany, has been with the sole aim of staying ahead of the demand curve from customers with some of the most sophisticated and challenging cargoes.

Throughout its 12 years of existence, BBC Chartering has developed a policy of strong new building that has seen the company, now based in Leer, Germany, grow to operating a fleet of more than 140 multi-purpose heavy lift ships that comprise one of the largest break bulk fleets afloat. This young fleet averages an impressive age of five years and offers incredible choice and flexibility, with capacities ranging from 3,500dwt to 20,000dwt and lifting capabilities from 80t to 500t.

With most of the vessels characteristic shallow draft, each vessel is capable of delivering any cargo to any port, including offshore operations. The adjustable tween decks optimise the hold to fit cargo of differing dimensions, making each vessel as efficient as possible.

In order to stay ahead of the demand curve, BBC continues to invest in the future. New buildings, which will be introduced over the next three years until 2011, will have a capacity up to 37,000dwt and lifting capabilities up to 900t.

BBC Chartering mainly operates worldwide tramp services but also offers liner services that secure access to some of the world's most challenging locations for break bulk and heavy lift items. BBC has a suitable vessel for the different types of cargo, whether it is break bulk, heavy lift, project cargo or bulk.

Demonstrating continual oversight of the break bulk and heavy lift businesses means BBC Chartering will not be left behind by market developments. The switching between tramp and liner operation works completely to each client's advantage, as it generally means better market access and more cost-effective rates that will only benefit customers.

BBC Chartering works to move some of the largest and bulkiest items ever transported across the world's oceans. Some of the many activities undertaken by the company include lifting and moving cargo for the oil and gas industry, heavy industry, mining complexes, heavy road and rail vehicles, yachts, bulk and noncontainerised loads. A growing revenue stream is the buoyant renewable energy sector.

BBC Chartering would not enjoy its excellent reputation for being a reliable and competent partner in the shipping market if it were not for the enthusiasm and professionalism of the BBC staff, starting from our receptionist through to our technical department pre-planning and executing loading, lashing and unloading operations of extremely heavy and bulky pieces, where every millimetre can be critical.

Powerful alliances

Also in 2006, BBC partnered with Dan-Gulf, founding Caytrans BBC, which is based out of New Orleans, to establish a larger presence in the US Gulf and Caribbean. Alliances are, of course, not the only way to strengthen and maintain a market presence.

The message of the company has remained unchanged since the carrier's launch in 1997: simply to provide a worldwide network of ships for every break bulk, heavy lift, project cargo and bulk cargo requirement.
