This paper describes the fundamentals of the neutral admittance based earth-fault protection and suggests improvements to the traditional measuring principle and operation characteristics. The performance is also evaluated and compared with traditional earth-fault protection schemes. The results show that the neutral admittance criterion has potential to become a standard and widely used earth-fault protection function in high impedance earthed networks.
