Siemens to supply wind turbines to Sheringham Shoal offshore wind farm

Total volume of two major contracts, awarded to the company is more than E450 m

German engineering firm Siemens Energy has received an order from StatoilHydro and Statkraft to provide 88 wind turbines to the Sheringham Shoal offshore wind farm off the east coast of the UK.

The company claims that upon completion in 2011, the 315MW project will provide clean energy to over 220,000 households. In addition to the supply of 88 SWT-3.6-107 wind turbines, Siemens was also awarded a five-year initial service contract, which can be extended up to 11 years. The total volume of the contract is more than E450 million.

According to Siemens Energy, Sheringham Shoal is equally owned by StatoilHydro and Statkraft through the subsidiary Scira Offshore Energy . The contract with Siemens was awarded by Scira StatoilHydro and Statkraft announced the new partnership.

The Sheringham Shoal offshore wind farm will be located 17km to 22km from the north Norfolk coastal town of Sheringham and 5km north of the offshore sand bank known as Sheringham Shoal.

Wolfgang Dehen, CEO of the Siemens Energy Sector, said: It is an important signal that StatoilHydro and Statkraft as key players in the energy industry enter the offshore wind power market. Even in challenging times offshore wind farms prove to be both a valuable and profitable investment.
