Rosatom Signs Inter-Governmental Agreement With Poland For Return Of Spent Nuclear Fuel From Eva And Maria Research Reactors
Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation (Rosatom) and Government Commissioner for Nuclear Energy, Deputy Minister of Economy of Poland Hana Trojanowska signed an inter-governmental agreement for the return of spent nuclear fuel from Polish “Eva” and “Maria” research reactors to Russia. The agreement stipulates the retrieval of spent nuclear fuel from Institute of Atomic Energy Radioisotope Center POLATOM in Otwock-Swierk for temporary storage and consequence processing.
The Russian-Polish cooperation in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy is focused on the operation of research reactors. The Soviet Union built two research reactors in Poland: Eva reactor (10 MW, shut down) and Maria reactor (30 MW, in operation).
The agreement confirms the commitment of the parties to strengthen the nuclear nonproliferation regime and is a follow-up on Russia’s efforts in the framework of its agreements with the US on retrieval of fresh and spent highly enriched fuel from the reactors of Russian design. In 2006–2007 Russia already retrieved some fresh highly enriched fuel from Poland.
Presently, the parties are preparing for the return of spent nuclear fuel to Russia. A specially restored Russian ship will make its first voyage in mid Sept 2009. After 2012 Russia will take back the low enriched and highly enriched fuel stored in the reactor zone. The agreement has been signed for 20 years but can be prolonged.
