Protesters Oppose RWE npower’s Proposal To Construct Coal-Fired Power Plant In Northumberland

EBR Staff Writer Published 05 May 2009

PANiC Stations (People Against New Coal-fired Power Stations), Coal Caravan activists and Make Poverty History North East united to protest RWE npower Limited’s (RWE npower) plan to construct a GBP2 billion coal-fired power plant at Cambois close to Blyth in Northumberland. The protesters held workshops and negotiations and showcased The Age of Stupid, a climate change film. The plant would be situated on the former Blyth Power Station’s site, but would generate up to six times the old capacity.

RWE npower has been attempting to garner support for its proposed power plant, which they state will create 200 permanent and 3,000 construction jobs for the village.

However, residents of the village have rejected the proposal.

Coordinator for PANiC Stations, Malcolm Reid, said “The majority of people here remember the filth of the old power station – the noise from the transport and the dust from the ash, as well as how hideous it was. The new station would only bring a handful of jobs.”

Dr David Golding, chairman of PANiC Stations and development coordinator for Make Poverty History North East, said “There are both local concerns and global ones surrounding new coal power stations - and both are entirely legitimate.”
