PPL’s 1,149 MW Unit 1 At Susquehanna Nuclear Power Plant Operates At 94% Power

EBR Staff Writer Published 13 April 2009

PPL Corporation’s (PPL) 1,149 megawatt (MW) unit 1 at Susquehanna nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania was at 94% power on early April 13, 2009, up from 66% of capacity on early April 9, 2009, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said. The unit had been reduced for planned maintenance, a plant spokesman said. The station is located at Berwick, Pennsylvania, about 125 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

Meanwhile, the adjacent 1,140 MW unit 2 remained shut for a planned refueling outage that began last week.

PPL said that unit 2 is on a 24-month refueling cycle and would return to service before the peak summer demand season.

PPL is also in the middle of a program to boost the plant's output in phases. The first phase, completed on unit 1 in 2008, increased the plant's output by about 50 MW. In 2009, 2010 and 2011, PPL will improve additional equipment, which should add another 110 MW.
