Payment card skimming problem bigger than first thought – report

EBR Staff Writer Published 09 May 2006

The security problem associated with the new Chip & PIN payment system, which has been highlighted by Shell's decision to suspend its operation, is actually a more widespread problem, the Daily Mail newspaper has reported.

Chip & PIN's reputation has been tarnsihed following the revelation that petrol retailer Shell was pulling the payment system out of service in 600 of its UK sites. According to the newspaper report, other retailers have also experienced similar problems. Shell took the decision to withdraw the payment option on its forecourts after discovering that hundreds of customers had had their card details stolen in a fraud valued at over GBP1 million. Now, the Daily Mail says that other petrol retailers, including BP and Esso, are concerned that they have experienced similar security intrusions.
