FirstEnergy Shuts Its 849 MW Unit 1 At Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station

EBR Staff Writer Published 20 April 2009

FirstEnergy Corporation (FirstEnergy) has shut its 849 megawatt (MW) unit 1 at Beaver Valley nuclear power station in Pennsylvania on early April 20, 2009, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said. The unit was decreased to 82% on April 17, 2009, as it coasted down for a planned month-long refueling outage expected to start in late April 2009. The unit’s last shut for refueling was from about September 24, 2007 to October 25, 2007 which is on an 18 month refueling cycle.

The 1,681 MW Beaver Valley station is situated in Beaver county, about 35 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.

The station has 892 MW unit 1 and the 846 MW unit 2, which have entered service in 1976 and 1987.

The unit 2 at the station continued to operate at full power.

FirstEnergy has filed with NRC to renew the original 40-year operating licenses for both units for another 20 years, in 2007.
