E.ON signs LNG infrastructure development deal in Equatorial Guinea

German natural gas distribution company E.ON Ruhrgas has signed an agreement for the development of liquefied natural gas infrastructure in the Western African country of Equatorial Guinea.

According to the company, the agreement envisages a consortium comprising Sonagas, E.ON Ruhrgas, Union Fenosa Gas and Galp Energia participating in drawing up a master plan for Equatorial Guinea and thus promoting the commercialization of gas reserves, not least for future exports, in the Gulf of Guinea.

Jochen Weise, member of the E.ON Ruhrgas board of management responsible for gas supply, said: “The systematic expansion of our liquefied natural gas (LNG) business will make an important contribution towards security of supply for our markets.”

Earlier in December 2008, E.ON Ruhrgas said that the company was awarded the Rhourde Yacoub exploration permit in the 7th Algerian Licence Round.
E.ON Ruhrgas already has own gas production in Norway and UK. Expansion to North and West Africa is now taking place in order to secure gas and LNG supplies for the European markets. In the course of 2008, E.ON Ruhrgas joined a planned LNG project in Equatorial Guinea and established representative offices in Algeria, Libya and Nigeria.
