EEPCo Works On ETB2.3 Billion Wind Energy Project
The Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) is working on the wind energy projects with a cost of over ETB2.3 billion, as part of the attempts for producing energy from of renewable sources. EEPCo officials said that the company is performing the project with the capacity of producing 120 megawatt (MW) electric power in the Tigray state. The project will increase the electric power supply in six kebeles of the state and will play a vital role in minimizing global warming.
EEPCo public relations department head, Misikir Negash also specified that the Ashegona wind energy project being executed in Enderta woreda of the Tigray state is also in progress in collaboration with the Chinese government.
Since study on environmental impact of the project has already been finalized the project is projected to be launched in 2009, Negash added.
The opening of the wind energy projects would play an vital role in addressing scarcity of electric power supply in the state, he said, adding that the project is projected to be completed by next Ethiopian budget year.
Studies on eight renewable electric power source projects are being performed in many parts of the nation, Negash said, adding that fund raising activities are in progress so as to develop over 8,000 MW electric powers from wind.
Studies conducted on the nation’s potentials of renewable energy specify that the country has the capacity to produce 8,000 to 10,000 MW electric power from wind, 200 MW from geothermal and over 45,000 MW from hydro power, Negash said.
