EC To Back New Coal-fired Plant In UK
The European Commission is planning to back the construction of a new coal-fired power plant at Hatfield, near Doncaster in the UK to the extent of GBP165m, Associated Press reported.
According to Chris Davies, member of the European parliament (MEP) for North West England, the announcement is expected to be made in few days and the cash subsidy is likely to go to the new coal-fired plant in Hatfield.
Mr Davies, told Associated Press: "An announcement is due very shortly about the locations of seven carbon capture and storage demonstration projects to be built across Europe. The word is that Hatfield has beaten off rival funding bids for schemes at Kingsnorth, Tilbury and Longannet.
“Coal will be used to generate electricity for many decades to come, but it will be coal with the CO2 removed and buried permanently in rocks deep beneath the North Sea."
Powerfuel Power will build the plant on the site of Hatfield Colliery, Yorkshire. As reported, the plant has the backing of National Grid as part of a project to build a network of CO2 pipelines.
The move comes along E.On's announcement to delay its plan to build a new coal-fired power plant at Kingsnorth in Kent for up to three years. E.On said that the company planned to delay the investment decision on the Kingsnorth plant due to a decline in the electricity demand.
