E.ON proposes solutions for cleaner next generation power production

EBR Staff Writer Published 06 April 2006

E.ON UK has demonstrated its strategy for cleaner future energy generation by revealing plans to store emissions from a coal fired plant under the North Sea and renewing its lobbying of the government over nuclear power.

According to reports, the UK arm of the German energy titan is considering building a GBP500 million 'clean coal' power plant in Lincolnshire. Innovatively, the company intends the new facility to be less polluting to the environment than current coal fired plants by transporting and storing its harmful emissions under the North Sea. The plan forms part of a submission by the company to UK authorities about the future course of energy policy in Britain. In the document E.ON backs a wide ranging portfolio of power sources, advocating gas, nuclear, biomass and renewables in its energy mix. However the company also strongly endorses the nuclear option. Speaking of the government review currently underway, E.ON UK chief executive Paul Golby said: [It is] the single most important work to shape the power and gas industry for the next 50 years.
