CNNC To Build Uranium Exploration Base In China
China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) is going to set up a uranium exploration base in the northwestern Xinjiang Autonomous Region, China, Dow Jones reported. The company said this move is in line with Chinese government's plan to increase the percentage of nuclear power in the nation's energy mix. CNNC has stepped up domestic and also overseas exploration of uranium, to meet the estimated surge in demand for the fuel as additional nuclear power plants come online in next 10 years.
Currently, CNNC is involved in uranium projects in six countries, along with Jordan, Kazakhstan, Russia and Algeria.
According to domestic media reports, China is considering revising its target for installed nuclear power capacity to 86 gigawatts (GW) by 2020, up from its original official target of 40GW.
