Clinton Foundation Signs MoU To Build 5,000 MW Solar Park In Gujarat, India
The Clinton Foundation has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to build solar park in Gujarat state, India, The Daily Telegraph reported. The solar park will have the capacity to produce over 5,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity. Gujarat state's Energy Minister Saurabh Patel said that the state government had provided 1,500 hectares of land to build the solar power projects.
The government will also provide financial incentives for companies which start producing electricity before December 2010.
The contracts with 40 energy companies have been signed by the state government, each planning to generate between five and 50 MW of solar energy. One plan will see the Pakistan border area lined with large solar mirrors to transform the sun's rays into power. The local officials have reported that Patan and Banaskantha districts, which are districts located at Gurarat's border with Pakistan, are suitable for producing solar power.
"Land availability is not an issue here. Sunlight is plenty and rainfall is sparse. It is an ideal location for solar power generation," said one local official.
Saurabh Patel has reported that the officials from the Clinton Foundation had visited earlier in 2009 and are currently looking for several locations to build the solar park. "They will bring in investors, create infrastructure and new technology and finance will be made available. It will be the world's biggest solar plant."
