Alcantara Continues Coal-Fired Power Plant Construction In Sarangani

Alcantara owned CONAL Holdings would continue the building of coal-fired power plant in Maasim, Sarangani. The cost of constructing the plant is $450m, reported Manila Standard Today.

Gregorio Gonzales, the project manager, informed that the construction of the 200MW plant is planned under two.

Gonzales continued that the first phase is expected to be completed by 2012 and the second phase of constructing another 100MW plant that would be completed within 18 to 24 months period, after the commencement of the first 100MW plant. The project is to be finished by 2014.

According to the power industry players, there would be an increase in the electricity demand in Mindanao over the next three years. The increase in power demand annually would start in 2010.

According to Archimedes Flores, general manger of Aboitiz Energy Solutions, a sister company of Davao Light and Power Co., there would be fall of 7.5% in the reserve capacity in Mindanao, or for the power demand of 212MW in 2010 there would be a shortfall of 84MW.

Joseph Nocos vice president for business development in Conal Holdings informed that if no new power plants were commissioned, Mindanao would face power interruptions.
