ABB, a power and automation technology company, has bagged a $34m contract from the Saudi Electricity Company, which was booked in the second quarter, for the renovation and expansion of 20 distribution substations for a better network.
The scope of the order includes design, engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of the measures to improve the substations. The equipments that are to be supplied would include medium-voltage switchgear, capacitor banks, protection and control equipment, and a SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system that will enable the plant to manage the flow of power in the network. The project is expected to be ended before 2010.
The company is a major supplier of air- and gas-insulated substations, with an installed base of approximately 10,000 substations across a range of voltage levels up to 800 kV.
Peter Leupp, head of ABB’s Power Systems division, said: “ABB is already executing several turnkey substation projects in the region. These new projects will support the country’s efforts to increase power capacity and grid reliability.”
