ABB Bags $24m Contract For Substation In UK

ABB, a power and automation technology company, has received a $24m contract from National Grid for a 400 kV substation. The substation would connect a new power plant in the north-west of England to the power grid.

The Carrington Power project, a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant, is situated on the site of a former coal-fired power station near Manchester. The project comprises two 430MW generator modules and would be completed by 2013 to reach the power needs of approximately one million households.

The company’s scope of contract includes the supply of five bays of gas insulated switchgear (GIS) and associated systems. The project’s future expansion would include additional seven bays of GIS equipment, which has also been allowed for.

Claudio Facchin, global head of ABB’s substation business, a part of the company’s Power Systems division, said: “ABB’s GIS solution, with its compact footprint, is ideal for such applications.”
